Morocco Travel FAQ – Your Questions Answered
Quick, reliable answers to the most common questions about visiting Morocco — visas, safety, money, transport, the Sahara, Ramadan, and more. Plan with confidence and design your perfect trip with Morocco Custom Tours.
Do I need a visa to visit Morocco?
Many nationalities (EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, etc.) can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. Always check the latest rules with your local Moroccan consulate before traveling.
When is the best time to visit Morocco?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer mild weather across most regions. Summer is hot inland and in the Sahara; coastal cities stay pleasant. Winter is great for city breaks and the desert (cool nights).
Is Morocco safe for travelers (including solo female)?
Yes. Morocco is considered safe; use normal travel common sense. Dress modestly, avoid deserted areas late at night, and use licensed guides/transport.
What’s the difference between Merzouga, Zagora, and Agafay?
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi): high golden sand dunes, classic Sahara. Zagora: smaller dunes/rocky areas, closer than Merzouga. Agafay: rocky desert near Marrakech — ideal for short escapes and sunset dinners.
Can I sleep in the desert? What are the camp facilities?
Yes. We arrange standard and luxury camps with private tents, real beds, dinner/breakfast, music by the fire, and sunrise camel rides. Luxury tents include en-suite bathrooms and hot showers.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech? What’s the usual itinerary?
About 560 km (≈9 hours by road). The classic plan is a 3-day tour with stops at Aït Benhaddou and Dades Valley. A private driver-guide keeps the pace comfortable and flexible.
What’s the currency? Can I use cards and ATMs?
The Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Cards work in many hotels/riads and larger shops; always carry cash for souks and remote areas. ATMs are widely available in cities.
How do I get a SIM/eSIM and stay connected?
Local providers (Orange, Maroc Telecom, Inwi) sell prepaid SIMs at airports and city shops. eSIM is available on many devices. Coverage is good in cities; patchy in deep desert.
What should I wear? Any cultural etiquette?
Modest, breathable clothing is appreciated. Pack layers (cool desert nights), a scarf/hat for sun/wind, and comfortable walking shoes. Ask before photographing people; greet with "Salam Alaykum".
Is tap water safe? Dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free)?
Drink bottled water. Moroccan cuisine offers many veggie options (tagines, salads, couscous). We can accommodate vegan and gluten-free diets with advance notice.
Can I drink alcohol in Morocco?
Yes, in licensed hotels, restaurants, and bars. It is not typically served in traditional medina eateries, and public drinking is discouraged.
How do I get around — trains, buses, or private driver?
Trains and buses connect major cities. For deserts, mountains, and flexible sightseeing, a private car with driver-guide is the most time-efficient and comfortable option.
What are the plugs and electricity voltage?
Type C/E plugs (two round pins), 220 V. Bring a universal adapter and a power bank for long road days.
What should I pack for a desert tour?
Breathable layers, light jacket, scarf, sunglasses, sunscreen, closed-toe shoes, headlamp, reusable bottle, and a small backpack. In winter: warm fleece/thermal layers.
Is traveling during Ramadan okay?
Yes. Tourist services run normally; some restaurants reduce daytime service. Evenings after iftar are lively. Dress modestly and be respectful.
Typical distances: Marrakech to Chefchaouen, Fes to Sahara?
Marrakech → Chefchaouen: ~570 km (best with a stopover). Fes → Merzouga: ~470 km (≈7.5–8.5 h). We tailor multi-day trips to keep the pace relaxed.
Are drones allowed in Morocco?
Drones are restricted; permits are required and often hard to obtain. Do not bring a drone unless you have official authorization.
Do I need travel insurance?
Strongly recommended. Choose a policy covering medical care, evacuation, trip interruption, and baggage.
How do booking, deposit, and cancellation work?
For custom tours we take a deposit to secure hotels/camps and driver-guide. Balance is due before arrival or on day one. Flexible rescheduling where possible — full terms provided with your itinerary.
Can you design a fully private custom itinerary?
Absolutely. Tell us your dates, interests, pace, and budget — we’ll craft a tailored route across deserts, cities, and mountains. Start here: request a custom Morocco tour.
